Under extremely hazardous conditions a steel and concrete structure was built hastily immediately after the accident. The new concrete and steel shelter was built over the still-radioactive remains of the reactor that melted down as a result of the accident and is 105 metres tall, 150 metres in length with a width of 257 metres and has a 100 years life expectancy.
