Prince’s longtime friend Madonna joined by special surprise guest Stevie Wonder for a powerful performance of “Purple Rain” at the Billboard Music Awards Sunday evening in Las Vegas.
After a touching cover of Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares to You,” Wonder could be heard off stage singing the first few bars of the famous Prince song. Madonna walked over to stage right, grabbed his hand and lead him to the center of the stage where the two sang to thunderous applause.
Canadian musician, The Weeknd, honored his hero, Prince, while accepting his award for the Top Hot 100 Artist of the Year.
“I want to dedicate this award to the late, great Prince,” he said. The musician said that he got to accept the award for best soul/R&B album at the American Music Awards last November from Prince.
“I didn’t know him, but he was very close to me, and he will always be an inspiration and help me push the envelope.”
